The Decisions That Matter
Most significant is the decision to move over to the other side of the table after learning brand management for nine years in the Advertising Industry. Better perspectives of managing business for various industries. Wider horizon. More opportunities to learn and expand.
Changes In The Professional Environment:
The global economic environment is lot more dynamic. Equally dynamic product life cycle management. Stress is on innovation for quicker and greater success. Business opportunities keep expanding while cutting edge technology makes all the difference to be quick, make early gains and expand.
The Journey So Far:
Exciting. Worked with great professionals. Brand management for two-wheelers and telecom was thrilling. Quick results on initiatives taken. More often great response from Sales and Product teams. Other times I would get feedback and improve. Corporate brand management is much more challenging.
Degrees That Matter:
Bachelors in Engineering and Masters in Business Administration would be welcome. In addition, a PG Diploma in Communication / Advertising Managemnt would be useful.
Other Thoughts:
Flexibility is key for many beginners. They should be ready to adapt themselves as they grow. Leadership is not about how many work under you but it is a matter of your perspective which is different that it inspires and excites the whole group to follow your direction for organisational success.
Job Profile:
Broadly Strategic External Relations. Too early to expand in the current organisation.
Prized Accomplishment(s):
Devising a strategy to enable TVS-Suzuki hive off 'Suzuki' without impacting the big revenue contribution from motorcycles which carried Suzuki on the petrol tanks. When I commenced the work it did not appear to be a great opportunity to showcase my skills. But, these opportunities are very rare.
Growth Strategy:
I had the opportunity to work in diverse industries. This definitely helps when it comes to handling different technologies and different consumer groups. It allows me get the younger generation evaluate opportunities from a different perspective which allows them to think, plan and prosper.
Working Life Management:
Early years were really tough. Missed a lot of family 'fun'. These days I wake up early on holidays to get that extra time to walk or talk with my family. Travel with family during holidays - twice a year. Use little opportunities off and on to connect with them through skype or on the phone.
Done Differently:
Identify my passion and stick to it perhaps much earlier that I did.
Role Model:
Plenty of leaders from various walks of life. Each of them have a distinguishing quality which can be imbibed. Role Models are a continuous stream. It is not one. What inspires me more is people with winning ideas from J.K. Rowling to Steve Jobs to Mark Zuckerberg and NGO led by Dr.Shantha Sinha.
