Deep Kalra, the Founder and Chairman of MakeMyTrip, announced at a recent travel conclave organized by the MakeMyTrip Foundation that India's sustainable tourism market is poised for significant growth. Currently valued at approximately $37 million, Kalra projects that this market could expand to an impressive $216 million over the next decade. He emphasized the vast potential within the sustainable tourism sector, noting that while the current market size is modest around Rs 320 crores its growth trajectory positions it as one of the fastest growing segments in the industry.

Kalra pointed out that, at present, only 1 to 2 percent of tourism in India can be classified as sustainable, which starkly contrasts with international figures. This indicates a substantial opportunity for development and improvement in sustainable practices within the Indian tourism sector.

On a global scale, the sustainable tourism market is expected to experience remarkable growth, projected to rise from approximately $3.12 trillion this financial year to a staggering $11.4 trillion in the next ten years. This highlights a growing awareness and demand for sustainable travel options worldwide, presenting a unique opportunity for India to enhance its offerings in this area. As the country looks to capitalize on this trend, the focus on sustainable tourismcould not only benefit the environment but also contribute significantly to the economy.
