India's drone industry has experienced significant growth over the last decade, with increased momentum after the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Ankit Mehta, CEO of Indian drone manufacturer IdeaForge. He highlighted the enabling environment created by the Indian government, easing regulatory restrictions on drone use during the pandemic, and the adoption of technology for various applications. Mehta emphasized that the distinctiveness of Indian drones lies in their ability to operate in harsh environments, such as high altitudes, extreme temperatures, and diverse terrains.

IdeaForge, ranked fifth globally in the dual-use category of civil and defense drones, is entering the competitive US drone market. The company is showcasing its products in various US cities, aiming to tap into the growing interest in drone technology. Mehta noted the excitement and interest in IdeaForge's products, particularly highlighting the autonomy and unique features of their drones.

Indian drones have been developed to address specific challenges, including traffic management, crowd control, counterinsurgency, counter-terrorism, and border management. The ability of Indian drones to operate in diverse and challenging conditions, including the Himalayan region and Rajasthan deserts, contributes to their uniqueness.

Mehta's visit to the US includes product demonstrations to potential users, showcasing drones like the Netra V 4 Pro, offering over 90 minutes of flying time with payloads. IdeaForge, established in 2007 by a group of Mumbai IITians, aims to leverage its experience gained in India, where its drones have been used in over 420,000 missions, to demonstrate the adaptability and performance of its products in different environments.

The Indian government's initiatives, including a production-linked incentive scheme for drones and restrictions on technology imports, support the growth of the indigenous drone industry. Mehta stressed the need for sustained long-term investments, including enhancements to incentive schemes, to further develop the drone ecosystem and compete globally. He highlighted the potential for Indian drones to cater to varied terrains and weather conditions, emphasizing the country's unique capabilities in drone technology.
